Artist Biography:
Mary Walker lives with her husband and three dogs on Johns Island where she has a painting and printmaking studio. Walker was born in New York City and when she was five, her family moved to North Carolina. In college she majored in mathematics, but took as many art courses as possible. After college she taught math in New York and while there took courses at the Art Students League. It was then that Walker began her lifetime commitment to art. As a narrative painter, her main interest is with the figure.
During 2007, Walker was awarded a residency at the Margo-Gelb Dune-Shack on the Cape Cod National Seashore and was the poster artist for the Piccolo Spoleto Spotlight Concert Series. She is the 2006 winner of the Griffith Lowcountry Artist’s Award and has received several grants from the South Carolina Arts Commission and the LQAGP. In 2004 she organized The Scrolls, an anti-war project involving both national and international artists which has been exhibited in Charleston, Cincinnati, and Washington, DC. In the last several years she has made trips to Italy, Ireland, and to Provincetown, Massachusetts to work and vacation. She has taught and worked in print studios, both in the US and in Italy and has exhibited frequently in the Southeast as well as nationally and internationally.

About the Work:
“Though I work in three different mediums: painting, printmaking, and collage, I find collage to be the most playful of the three. To make the collages, I paint different papers -- some are used as the background and some as the objects or figures. Then I cut the different shapes of the birds, houses, moon, or coffee pot. Using both the positive and negative shapes gives a liveliness to the imagery and when used in consecutive images creates a visual connection. The larger collages were made to depict a joyful, springtime music festival. The smaller collages depict daily activities such as pouring coffee, watching the cat, looking at the moon.”
