Artist Biography:
Colleen Terrell is originally from Mobile, Alabama and received her BFA from Auburn University. In 2002 she made Folly Beach, SC her home. Terrell works out of a small studio that is too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter. Consistent elements of her work include intense color and composition. She believes her role as an artist is to act as both lens and mirror to the viewer- revealing unseen connections that reflect basic human conditions.

About the Work:

Colleen Terrell’s work contrasts the immediate influence of time and the perceived influence of memory through the documentation of aging homes and neighborhoods in urban Charleston, SC. She is drawn to Charleston’s idiosyncratic architecture in areas both dilapidated and maintained. She works from photographs, imparting to each painting a personal, eye-level perspective. The work is deconstructed and fractured through linear elements and textural patterns. These dissections act as visual representation of the immediate effect of man on our environment, and as a reference to the disintegration of buildings and neighborhoods over time. These areas have been through several cycles of prosperity and poverty. Her paintings attempt to capture the flux and change on a human level.
