Artist Biography:
Erik Johnson received his B.F.A. from East Carolina University and his M.F.A. from Tulane University where he focused on foundry, fabrication, ceramics, woodshop, carving, and jewelry. Johnson has taught sculpture at numerous universities including Tulane University, Loyola University, University of Alabama at Birmingham, Memphis College of Art, University of Mississippi, and is currently at the College of Charleston.
In addition to presenting and leading numerous lectures and workshops nationally, Johnson’s work has also been exhibited extensively in the United States. In South Carolina, his work has been exhibited as part of the Sumter Accessibility Project, Middleton Place Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition, Redux Contemporary Art Center, City Gallery at Waterfront Park, McMaster Gallery at the University of South Carolina, and the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art at the College of Charleston.

About the Work:
The Iron Relic series is an artistic interpretation of our industrial heritage. It is somehow humorous that industrial objects created as recently as thirty years ago are now excavated, catalogued, studied, and exhibited as artifacts. These pieces of plastic cutlery double as enlarged, cast iron industrial artifacts. The series compares the Iron Age with the Plastic Age using a subtle nostalgia mitigated by sarcastic wit.
