Artist Biography:
Anthony Green is a 32-year old self-taught artist from Charleston, South Carolina. In 1999 he began his professional work as an artist in graphite and ink and in 2003, he expanded his media to include acrylics and pastels. Although his skill was recognized as a child and he was encouraged in his painting, Green chose not to pursue formal art training at an art school or college. Instead, he chose to hone his skills on his own, learning techniques through years of practice.
The inspiration for his work comes from his experiences growing up in the Lowcountry of Charleston. Some of Green’s earliest memories are of grabbing his cane pole, running to the creek, and mashing bread around a three-pronged hook that he would use to catch fish with all day long. He recalls the sound of crickets, stories told by his elders, and summer evenings filled with neighborhood children playing games outside until dark.
Anthony Green is passionate about the Lowcountry, seeking to capture the spirit of Charleston by exploring and documenting the lives of people in Charleston and the surrounding islands. The realism of his portraits reflect a sense of the life behind the subject; their emotions and thoughts.
Green’s work has been praised by South Carolina art appraisers, gallery owners, collectors, and artists alike. He seeks to make a true and lasting impact in the world of African American art.

About the Work:

“Reflecting on my childhood and Charleston’s history, and experiencing Charleston’s cultures compels me to paint the scenes depicted in my work. I work best when I can make a personal connection with my subjects. My hope is that the viewer can experience some of the emotions I felt while painting.”
